Masked

Medium: acrylic paint on canvas
Scale: 8" x 10"
When thinking about my personal experience with the pandemic, I feel a whole wave of emotions. This piece is intended to represent all the different emotions, experiences, and opinions that people have - not just my own. The two canvases in each row are counterparts in both emotion and complementary color. The first set of portraits represent anger and judgement/fear. The red angry face has a mask on, but it is below the nose, and the green judgement/fear face has their mask on far above their nose. This pair represents the heated battle between those who are angry and defy the pandemic/mask wearing mandate and those who are more fearful/cautious. The second set represents joy and boredom. The yellow joyful face has a decorated mask which represents the people who have made the most of the situation and have even been creative with it. The purple boredom face wears a mask that is just barely covering their nose and represents those who are annoyed with the isolation, fear, and change in lifestyle. The last pair of portraits represent life and death. The orange, sad face, which is clearly alive, is gazing towards its counterpart with tears in their eyes, separated from their loved one. The blue face, representing those who have passed during the pandemic, is solemn and looks as if they are sleeping, no longer bound to the craziness of the world. In doing this project, it is my goal to express the diversity of life in response to the global pandemic in the hopes that we may see experiences and opinions different from our own.
