Haunting
By: Synthia Ayala and Carolyn Cheng
In Haunting Mr. Bones, artists Carolyn Cheng and Synthia Ayala string together still photographs to depict a small but thought provoking narrative. In this narrative, there is a sense of irony as those who appear to be living are the ones haunting a skeleton, who eventually is taken and turned into a ghost himself. Drawing upon the 19th century tradition of spirit photography, this series is both a photography and video piece, bringing the two concepts together enough to perhaps spark a bit of fun fright. The “stay at home” order has sometimes felt as if we are all ghosts confined to haunting our own homes.
Through Haunting Mr. Bones, the artists hope to provide the audience with a glimmer of playfulness and joy in this dark time in our lives. This year in particular has been hard on everyone, thus the artists felt it necessary to bring some amount of lightness to the heavy mood surrounding this period of our lives.
