library
by Danni Flowers (They/Them/Theirs)
library is an experimental storyboard consisting of original characters that a friend of mine and I have developed over the years. It is a reimagination of singer, song writer, and animator Jack Stauber’s music donning the same title. In my exploration, I challenged myself to immerse the characters mentioned in a visual narrative, a different expressive environment in comparison to an illustration. The elements of visual storytelling, character development, setting, and perspective were ones that I have expressed interest in for years and have finally put into practice with this new project.
“library” is a one-minute storyboard consisting of a family of three. A mother (Annie) who appears to be missing from the narrative, a father (Matthew) going to the library, and their son (Oliver) who decides to stay behind. I explore the aspect of open-interpretation in this project and allow the audience to deduce their own conclusions to this story, one of a small trip to the library.
Here are some of the process shots of my storyboard. My project began as five pages of thumbnails consisting of 39 frames to where my project came out to roughly the same amount, if not even more. The planning was the most important part of this project so that I could gauge the layout of the scene and what actions the characters would be doing within their scenes. You can see the comparisons between the planned thumbnails and the final product that they developed to be, with some of my favorite shots of my project.
