Detached

Daisy Camacho

Medium and materials: Mixed media; embroidery thread, canvas, ink, and eyeliner on wooden frames

Size: 10 ¾” x 14”

Detached is a 3-dimensional diptych piece which explores themes of body and mind, regarding the disconnect many women experience in relation to body dysmorphia. Through my process of attachment with the use of string as my medium, my goal is to allow for open discussion of the exploration of a female’s relationship with their own body. The idea of detachment proposes conflict between body and mind but also a sense of vulnerability and femininity, which is presented through the fragility of the material I used. My attempt is to bring comfort to the idea that women share similar thoughts and experiences regarding their internal and external insecurities. The strings attached in an unconventional manner express the feeling of urge and compulsiveness, while the imagery of the illustrations satisfy some sense of balance.

My inspiration drew from personal research, experiences, and compassion after listening and learning about other women’s struggles, where it became apparent to me that practices of weighing yourself, measuring, and body checking is a toxic reality a lot of women face. Taking notice of the normalization of body checking in which we allow ourselves to criticize our own bodies and find validation through pre-existing ideas of what our bodies should look like, I felt a great inclination to create the embodiment of what this uncontrollable habit looks like from my perspective. I believe art can heal and tackle situations, in situations where many don’t feel like they have a place to express their personal conflicts, and this piece is just that, questioning and reflecting a woman's sovereignty over their own body, with the interference of societal beauty standards.
