Aceso c.2020
My work is inspired by thinking of form and figure in relation to image and society. Imitating the style of ancient Greek sculptures, such as Venus de Milo, I chose to depict Aceso, the Greek goddess of the healing process, as I believe there is much healing we need to do within society and ourselves. Reflecting on how the female form has been damaged by societal expectations and representation, I replicated the look of the Japanese art form of Kintsugi, the art of repairing with gold to show the beauty of the healing process. The added sections of the piece are symbolic for the loss of the old and the need for new elements to heal. Made with wood glue and paper mache, the process creates textural imperfections and represents both fragility and strength. The added detail of the handmade clay gemstones is representative of something precious that is created from time, pressure, and heat demonstrating the change that can come from harsh conditions.
